Minimising Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis
Course Description:
This course aims to equip care workers with practical knowledge to support the early recognition, assessment, prevention and management of incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) in older adults. Participants will learn how to identify early signs of IAD, distinguish it from other types of skin damage, and incorporate appropriate skin care and prevention strategies into daily care. The course also explores staff responsibilities for recognising, documenting and reporting changes in skin integrity in line with the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards and the Aged Care Act 2024.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course, participants should be able to:
- Explain what Incontinence-Associated Dermatitis (IAD) is and the impact it can have on individuals.
- Recognise signs and symptoms of IAD.
- Describe how to accurately assess IAD findings to support your organisation’s documentation and reporting requirements.
- Differentiate IAD from an emerging pressure injury
- Identify and manage reversible causes of incontinence associated skin damage
